Day of Atonement
- "Yom Kippur" by Maurycy Gottlieb -- Fine Jewish
Art Print
This fabulous print of the famous work Day of Atonement by Maurycy
Gottlieb (1856-1879).
Short Biography of Maurycy Gottlieb
Maurycy Gottlieb was a renowned Jewish artist who accomplished
much in his short life of 23 years. He was born in 1856 in Drohobycz,
Galicia, and was raised in a modern, although traditional, Jewish
home, along with 10 siblings. At the young age of 16, Gottlieb
went to study art in Vilna, and from there moved on to Cracow.
In 1875 he left Cracow to study at the Munich Art School, where
he realized his true talent in painting. In 1878 he finished his
monumental painting "Day of Atonement", which portrays
himself and a few family members as synagogue congregants on Yom
Kippur. Its completion was hailed in all Jewish circles as being
a masterpiece, and Gottlieb was catapulted to fame. A few of his
other paintings are Yankel Zimbalist, King Casimir and His Beloved
Estherke, and The Jewish Wedding, among others. In 1879, the brilliant
prodigy passed away after only 23 short years.
Can be framed easily, and is a must for any Jewish home or Judaica
